Bettalights
If there is darkness, you need Bettalights
Lao Tzu once said it is better to light a candle than to curse the darkness. Of course, why light a candle if you have Bettalights? Michael Addinall believes that the future of the country belongs to our children. However, many children in SA today do not have the opportunities they should.
In fact globally, more than 2 billion people have no access to lights, so Michael decided to use what we have in abundance in Africa – namely, sunlight – to power a solution to light up the darkness. Bettalights provides light for children to study by, while also uplifting and improving their communities and creating employment in previously disadvantaged areas.
Bettalights, based in Mogale City, offers a five light solar solution with built in cellphone charger. As it is a DIY system, locally unemployed youth between 16 and 30 can be trained to perform the installations, thereby expediting faster delivery and keeping the monies generated in the community.
Designed specifically for African conditions – such as cost sensitivity, climate and solar irradiation conditions – Bettalights now requires assistance in expanding to the next level. It needs government policy to be changed to ensure that RDP and informal settlements have access to the solutions through subsidies. Also, it wants private corporations to consider making these solutions available to staff as part of a corporate social responsibility programme.
