Dabba Telecoms

Dabba’s Cloud brings a silver lining to Johannesburg

If you haven’t heard the term ‘digital divide’, you’ve probably been living under a rock in the desert for the past 15 years. The trouble with the digital divide is in finding someone to take on the enormous task of delivering voice and data services to underserviced areas. Rael Lissoos says that Dabba Telecoms is the company to do this.

Like a shining knight facing down the monopolistic dragons of the telecoms industry, Dabba delivers prepaid voice and data services to lower income and underserviced areas, thanks to the magic of the WiFi Cloud. Rael says that there are millions of people who need access to efficient and cheap voice and data services. It is, in fact, a fundamental prerequisite to economic growth and development, not to mention a basic human right.

Bringing voice and data to the masses that would otherwise be excluded from the information age has required the development of special technologies. Rael says Dabba  has achieved this while benefitting many other entrepreneurs.

Rael points out that the emerging market is growing and South Africa can take the lead in this market potential. He suggests that government encourage local projects and adapt regulations – an open market has been supported by ICASA yet in practice spectrum licenses are auctioned or awarded to big players making it very difficult for emerging technologies.

Dabba currently has 10,000 users in Joburg CBD and wants to reach a further 25,000.  To reach this scale the company needs about R5 million from an Angel Fund.

They also need a business model for the distribution and sale of airtime and internet access on the ground., as well as people with VOIP and wireless skills.
