Buffel Bags

Buffel Bags’ five shareholders made the brave move of leaving successful corporate careers for the very different world that is entrepreneurship.

There are three prongs to the Buffel Bags business: the sale of flat-packed heavy duty bags through retailers; the collection of the Buffel Bags once they’ve been filled with building, garden or household waste; and the delivery of small loads of sand, compost and similar products in Buffel Bags. It’s a convenient service with consumer and environmental benefits, but the challenge was to launch a new service concept and to educate the target market. Plus the fact that waste is really a “grudge” purchase.

Buffel Bags’ unique offer is taking these types of services to a new level for clients and customers while helping to introduce a more formalised structure to the small load waste collection sector, leading to recycling, which in the past was essentially the preserve of larger operators.

The business owners have succeeded by keeping open to opportunities beyond the core model, capitalising on the fact that the business can make money on the sale of the bags and not just the waste removal service. The novelty of “owning” a Buffel Bag as opposed to just having waste removed has helped customers to understand that the offering provides something more than what competitors offer, and at prices that are affordable.

And for the future? The plan is to take the products and “green” waste/recycling and delivery services to a national level, sweeping up business which is currently serviced by informal and unstructured operators, creating formal jobs while providing high service and product standards. The company is also securing deals whereby the Buffel brand covers other green services and products and becomes a recognisable brand of practical innovation in households and businesses alike.
