Todd Broome Utensils
Braai the beloved country!
After one too many evenings in Kenton on Sea, where the braai meat got too burnt as a result of insufficient lighting, Don Todd decided that if there were no braai tools with built in lights available, he would simply design one himself.
He says that with the price of meat today, it became expensive to repeatedly burn it. Add to that the problem of dealing with grubby and uncomfortable tongs, and it became his mission to develop the ‘Audi’ of braai tongs – one that was sleek, comfortable, technically advanced and had that ‘something special’.
Founding Todd Broome Utensils in Bergvliet in 2004, he developed his ground-breaking Butte braai tong that has a built-in removable light source. Clearly these tongs are no flash in the pan (or even spark in the braai), since they have already won an SABS design award and have a worldwide patent.
While he has sold some 20Â 000 units directly via the company Website (www.butte.co.za), Don says that in order to really hit the big time, what he needs is additional marketing ideas and in particular, the opportunity to partner with a major national retailer. Any introductions to small private operations, selected store chains, butchers or even corporate gift providers would also be welcome.
By synchronising his highly innovative product with the country’s favourite pastime, Don has the product that every South African male needs – they just don’t know it yet!
